Lobo Wildlife Lodge


This lodge is one of the cheapest stone built accommodation options in the northern Serengeti. As such it offers a quite basic hotel experience, but is comfortable and comes better recommended than some of the other H&L Wildlife Lodge resorts. The hotel is set in a stone outcrop, making its architecture both quirky and appealing. It has benefited from some recent renovation work.


Accommodation at Lobo Wildlife Lodge


The lodge comprises of 75 rooms, some overlooking the Serengeti National Park. Rooms are not large but are pleasantly decorated. They do not have a huge deal of personality, but are comfortable. Some have quite thin walls or are designed to interconnect which can lead to noise issues. While all rooms are advertised as having good views this is not the case. For excellent views of the National Park guests are advised to make use of the lodge’s well situated and comfortable observation deck.


Rooms feature 220 / 240V for shavers, safe, mini bar, telephone, tea/coffee-making facilities and hair dryer. Electricity is switched off between midnight and 0500 and guests are advised to bring torches for use in the night-time.


All rooms are en suite. Bathrooms are dated and could use upgrading. Hot water can be unreliable and takes a while to reach some rooms.


Food and Drink at Lobo Wildlife Lodge


Lobo’s restaurant has more character than some. With its tables spaced around an old fig tree and a feeling of colonial elegance it is an impressive room. However, the food, drink and service at the Fig Tree Restaurant are not exceptional.


Breakfast is standard; filling but uninspired. Hot and cold, English and Continental options are available. However, as breakfast is not served before 7am many travellers opt to take a packed breakfast which the hotel can arrange (as well as packed lunches). However, ‘take-out’ food from the lodges and camps on safari tends to be dull and unsatisfying. It is also usually prepared a day in advance, and can seem un-fresh.


Dinner is four course; soup, starter, main and dessert. While there is plenty of food and a nice selection to choose from, the standard of the food is not as high as guests might reasonably

expect given the cost of a visit to the Lobo.


The hotel offers a fair selection of alcoholic and soft drinks at reasonable prices.


Service at Lobo Wildlife Lodge


This is commonly attentive but, perhaps due to the lodge’s size, rather impersonal. While rooms and common areas are normally clean and well kept the staff tend to appear over-worked and unconcerned about the needs of individuals.


As is common of many of the more remote lodges in the region some staff lack the training and language skills that one would expect in resorts of this rating.


The lodge has a nice and well-maintained pool which is refreshing after safari. There is also a gift shop and ‘internet café.’ Internet and phone tend to be expensive, and, due to the hotel’s location internet service is slow and patchy. The hotel offers baby-sitting and laundry services on request and employs an on-site nurse. The hotel has a currency exchange facility and accepts credit cards. Tariffs for money exchange and card handling fees may prove high.


Things to do at Lobo Wildlife Lodge


The main attraction of the lodge is its location. It is well situated for viewing many varieties of game and, in season, parts of the migration. The wonder of the hotel’s situation becomes apparent from the pool and the observation deck.


As well as game drives and ornithological safaris the hotel can help arrange balloon safaris and picnics.


The hotel has a newly renovated pool and small fitness centre offering massage. It has a library and a satellite TV lounge as well.
